Re-evaluating K-Modernism
The 2026 Centennial Academic Conference serves as a critical forum for art historians, curators, and scholars to re-evaluate the historical and aesthetic significance of Byun Shi-ji’s body of work. This gathering aims to deepen the global understanding of his contribution to Korean modernism and his role as a bridge between Eastern spirituality and Western expressionism.
Keynote speakers and researchers will present papers on topics ranging from his unique use of ochre and calligraphic lines to his philosophical search for stillness amidst the storms of life. Through this intellectual exchange, we aim to build a lasting scholarly foundation for future studies of his art.
Selected papers from the conference will be published in a commemorative volume, ensuring that the insights shared during this centennial year contribute to the permanent discourse on 20th-century art history.
